Responsible Dog Ownership

Influencing the next generation of dog owners through storytelling

The children of today, are the dog owners of tomorrow. Owning a dog can be a fun and rewarding experience, yet children are often unaware of the responsibilities involved. By reading a story that shares the message of being a responsible dog owner, we are investing in a bright future for our dogs. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or a breeder, you too can be part of sharing the message. Storytelling provides children with exposure to relevant issues from a safe and enjoyable distance. In the process, they gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. What a perfect way to teach them how to care for their pets! Which books to choose?

A Story Of A Promising Puppy is a great choice! The AKC also has a Children’s Education Catalogue with a list of tools to help you teach your children about responsibility, caring, and safety. Or you can visit How To Love Your Dog, A Kid’s Guide To Dog Care.

About the book, A Story of a Promising Puppy

A STORY OF A PROMISING PUPPY is a delightful tale that shares the importance of being a responsible dog owner. The Discussion Guide with A Story of a Promising PuppyFollow-Up Activities at the end of the book gives parents and teachers the tools to help children reflect on the commitment involved in having a canine companion. With that mind, we took the opportunity to read the story in schools ( with the help of a promising puppy of course!), and invited friends who loved the story to do the same. Below, you will see photos of Trina, a 3rd grade teacher, myself, and others who read the story to children. Teachers and parents were thrilled to see the children’s eyes light up as they listened to the story, commented, and asked questions. We hope and believe that the words touched their hearts, as they learned that dogs are magnificent animals to be respected, cherished, and looked after with tender loving care! There is also a wonderful life lesson which will encourage your children to believe that they are beautiful, special, and loved! Please consider sharing with your children, students, or friends, this important message. Thank you for caring. For more information about the book and to look inside click here.

READING TO CHILDREN in public and private schools and to the Girl Scouts, A Story of a Promising Puppy

These photos were taken during school visits when A Story Of A Promising Puppy was read to children. Students also learned the proper way to greet and interact with a dog. I was delighted to learn that the story was also read to a group of girls to help them earn the Girl Scout Animal Helper Badge. Thank you to all the parents and educators who have shared this important message!

Among companion animals, dogs are unmatched in their devotion, loyalty and friendship to humankind. Anyone who has ever loved a dog can attest to its hundred-fold return. The excitement your dog shows when you come home, the wagging tail at the sound of the leash being taken from its hook, the delight in the tossing of a tennis ball, and the head nestled in your lap-those are only some of the rewards of being a dog owner.

Owning a dog is not just a privilege-it’s a responsibility. These animals depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. If you are considering taking a dog into your life, you need to think seriously about the commitment that dog ownership entails. If you already have a dog, you need to consider if you are fulfilling all your obligations as its owner.

The AKC is committed to helping dog owners raise happy, healthy dogs. The list below is certainly not exhaustive, but it contains some of the essential ways you can be the best dog owner you can be. To learn more, please visit The American Kennel Club Responsible Dog Owner Page

Leila was delighted to be invited to participate in the Responsible Dog Owners Day held annually by the Trap Falls Kennel Club. Not only was she able to share her books and do an author signing, but the highlight was being able to watch her dogs interact with children.

A little girl asked if she could read to Toby and Glory (the pups Leila brought along), and groups of kids sat with her pups throughout the day to soak in their love, cuddles and kisses.
